In January 1946, Harwell began its journey as a scientific campus, marking the beginning of an extraordinary legacy of innovation in clean energy, advanced computing, photonics, satellites, health technology, particle physics, and engineering. To commemorate our 80th anniversary, we are organising The Light Project – a landmark series of public engagement events celebrating our heritage of scientific excellence.
Named for the electromagnetic force that connects many of Harwell’s greatest breakthroughs – from satellite communications to advanced computing to laser technology to the Diamond Light Source – this initiative will illuminate our past achievements and inspire future generations.
Events
As part of The Light Project, we’re excited to host some incredible events across campus, both open to the public and Harwell staff.
World-class touring art installations, such as Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon, will serve as a catalyst for conversation and inspiration. Alongside these captivating artworks, our community of scientists and engineers will deliver engaging lectures and presentations, offering deeper insights for everyone eager to explore Harwell and the world of science.
