Gateway is a dedicated hub at Harwell Campus, designed to bring the civil and defence space sectors together in a practical, trusted and purpose-led way.
Officially opened by His Majesty King Charles III, the Gateway will help accelerate innovation, improve coordination and support delivery at greater pace and scale by providing a rich environment of skills, talent, capabilities and shared infrastructure.
Gateway includes flexible workspace, meeting rooms, secure collaboration spaces and convening facilities for organisations working across space, defence, innovation and investment.
Across the UK, innovative companies are transforming our understanding of what is possible in space. The Defence Investment Plan’s funding for space enables us to back these companies and help them deliver the technologies that now underpin our prosperity and security. We’re ready to work with industry, through this gateway, to keep space safe, for the mutual benefit of all nations.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, the Chief of the Air Staff

Gateway is both a physical destination and a new model for delivering on key priorities for space and defence in the UK. Based within the world-renowned Harwell Space Cluster, it will provide shared offices, meeting rooms, secure collaboration spaces and convening facilities for organisations working across government, industry, academia and investment.
By co-locating partners within one of the UK’s most dynamic science and innovation ecosystems, Gateway will create the conditions for faster collaboration, stronger alignment and more effective delivery.
Gateway is not only a physical hub with access to multidisciplinary cutting-edge facilities – it is a new way of working.
Dr Barbara Ghinelli, Founder of the UK Space and Defence Gateway
Gateway will support collaboration between national partners including UK Space Command, MOD, DSIT, UKRI, UKSA, ESA and the Satellite Applications Catapult, while strengthening international links with organisations such as ESA, NATO and allied space nations.
It will act as a national gateway rather than a stand-alone destination, connecting Harwell’s sovereign space capability with complementary space and defence expertise across the UK.
Aligned with the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Astra Carta principles, the Gateway will foster an ecosystem focused on sustainability, responsible growth and space-enabled services that benefit humanity.
With the opening of the UK Space and Defence Gateway, we step into a future where ambition and sustainability journey together among the stars.
