Celebrating the People Behind the Progress

Harwell Campus has played a vital role in some of the UK’s most remarkable scientific and technological breakthroughs. From the pioneers of atomic research in 1946 to today’s leaders in space science, biotech and climate innovation, Harwell has always been a place where big ideas come to life.

As part of the Harwell Light Project, a year of events marking our 80th anniversary, we are launching the Light Project Blue Plaque Campaign. This new initiative will honour individuals and discoveries that have made a lasting impact on the campus, on science and on society.

The plaques will create a permanent trail across Harwell, telling the stories of the people behind the progress and shining a light on their achievements.

Shine a Light on Harwell’s Pioneers

Whether it’s a renowned scientist like Mary Lyon, a pioneering technician, an unsung innovator or a breakthrough technology like Rutherford Cable, Lithium Ion batteries or the James Webb Space Telescope, we want to hear from you.

We’re inviting everyone in the Harwell community to nominate the individuals and breakthroughs that have helped shape the campus from 1946 to today.

Criteria

  • Led a breakthrough, made a major scientific or tech discovery.
  • Invented something new, created a tool, method or process with real-world impact.
  • Driven change quietly, made vital behind-the-scenes contributions.
  • Improved society, tackled global issues like health, climate or energy.
  • Built a business, founded or grew a game-changing company at Harwell.
  • Shaped history, played a key role in a milestone Harwell moment.
