Harwell Campus to host Earth Photography Exhibition and Workshops

Harwell Science and Innovation Campus will host a powerful outdoor exhibition of the winning images from the Royal Geographical Society’s 2025 Earth Photo competition. alongside photography workshops, from 8 September to 24 October 2025. The event forms part of The Light Project, a year-long programme celebrating the Campus’ 80th anniversary.

Open to the public and free to attend, the exhibition invites visitors to experience an extraordinary collection of images that capture both the beauty and the fragility of our world. The display is best enjoyed during daylight hours, allowing the full impact of the photography to be seen against the natural backdrop of the campus.

Launched in 2018 by the Royal Geographical Society, Earth Photo is a world-renowned programme that brings together still and moving images exploring the urgent issues shaping life on our planet. From striking portraits of communities on the frontline of climate change to breathtaking landscapes and intimate encounters with nature, every image challenges us to pause, reflect, and engage with the pressing questions of our time.

Rebecca Duvall, Head of Community at Harwell said: “Bringing Earth Photo to Harwell is about more than just an exhibition. The campus is a space where creativity, art and science meet. Photography has the power to spark curiosity, deepened understanding and open conversations about the challenges we face. We hope this exhibition inspires visitors of all ages to see our world differently and imagine new possibilities for its future.”

Alongside the exhibition, Harwell is hosting photography workshops, led by SharpShots Photo Club on Sunday 19th October for young people and their parent, grandparent or carer. Sessions are split into two groups, children (ages 7-11) and teenagers (up to 18). Participants will learn how to master focus, zoom, shutter speed, and light to make their landscape images stand out using professional DSLR cameras. Each person will finish with a set of creative photographs and can print their two favourites to take home. Information on how to book a place will be released soon. A small participation fee applies for the workshops, to ensure they remain affordable and accessible to all.

The Earth Photography exhibition is the latest in a series of events celebrating 80 years of world changing science and Harwell Science and Innovation Campus. Details of the year-long celebration and future events planned can be found here.

Harwell Campus is home to a number of striking art installations, from the Starburst in the Quad, the backdrop to the Earth Photo exhibition and a symbol of campus research during the Coronavirus pandemic, to Spacescapes, an outdoor journey through outer space.

Highlights also include a giant spacewoman mural on the new transport hub and Life, a sculpture on the RAL roundabout that reflects the mysteries and complexity of existence.
