
Harwell Campus launches public consultation to shape its vision as it looks to its centenary
Harwell Science and Innovation Campus has launched a public consultation inviting local communities, businesses and stakeholders to help shape the next chapter of its long-term plans, as the campus looks ahead to its 100th anniversary.
Building on more than 80 years at the forefront of UK scientific discovery, Harwell is setting out a 20-year vision for the future of the 700-acre campus ensuring it continues to power the UK’s leadership in science, technology and innovation while delivering lasting value for the local area. The Campus has the opportunity to evolve and making an even bigger impact on driving economic growth, creating exciting jobs and addressing the most important research challenges.
As a nationally significant science and innovation destination, Harwell Campus is home to a growing ecosystem of world-class research and pioneering companies. Since 2020, more than 1 million sq. ft of new laboratory, advanced manufacturing and workspace has been delivered, creating high-value jobs. A further 4 million sq. ft is planned as part of the campus’s long-term, government-backed masterplan.
The newly launched vision marks the next stage in that journey. The Campus team is seeking feedback on how Harwell’s future growth can best respond to local priorities, support regional and national innovation ambitions, and continue to deliver an inclusive, sustainable and well-connected campus as it moves towards its centenary.
The consultation will explore:
- How Harwell can evolve and continue as a beacon of science and innovation
- The types of employment space, facilities and services for the next 20 years
- How future development can enhance placemaking, accessibility and sustainability
- How can the campus further strengthen ties with the local community
