Harwell has one of the most ambitious campus investment plans in the world

We are investing £300 million to triple the amount of available lab space on campus – adding over 600,000 sq. ft in the next two years.

Harwell campus is already a remarkable place, with over 250 organisations and £3bn of national facilities including the UK’s (instantly recognisable UFO shaped) synchrotron, but over the last few years we have not been able to meet demand for companies who want to move here and become part of our community. Knight Frank reported that companies across the Golden Triangle are seeking 2.2 million sq. ft of lab space but only 350,000 sq. ft is available.

Given that Oxford University is spinning out more companies than anywhere else in the UK and other local universities like Cranfield are closing fast, we need to ensure we can offer the right space, environment, and home for these exciting companies to start-up, scale-up and have truly global impact.

Stuart Grant, CEO of Harwell Campus

We are investing £300 million to triple the amount of available lab space on campus – adding over 600,000 sq. ft (the equivalent of 2 Ellison Institutes) in the next two years. Some of our development will be specifically targeted at early-stage companies and spin-outs, such as Motherlabs, our accelerator offering, with a dedicated lab manager and shared services that make it easy to start-up a science business. Such as Co:LABS, which has been designed from the ground up to support starting and scaling science businesses.

The Co:LABS development we will create specific space dedicated to VC firms, allowing them to be closer to the companies they are investing in.

With the expansion of our advanced manufacturing capabilities and the addition of state-of-the-art facilities such as Moderna’s Innovation and Technology Centre, we reinforce our position as a key player in the UK’s research and development landscape.
