Kintsugi Workshop
What if the break isn’t the end of the story, but the most beautiful part of it?
As part of our Renew & Repair season, join us for a hands-on introduction to Kintsugi – the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and fine metal powders, traditionally gold. Rather then hiding cracks, kintsugi celebrates them, turning damage into something striking and meaningful.
Date: Wednesday 13th May
Time: 15:00 – 17:00
Venue: Quad Two, Rutherford Avenue
All equipment is provided.
Dating back to the 16th century and closely associated with tea culture (famously admired by tea master Sen no Rikyu), kintsugi captures a moment of breakage and transforms it into renewal – a beautiful reflection of this season’s theme.
Nishikawa Iku, founder of Kintsugi Oxford, was born and raised in Kochi, Japan. After supporting workshops at the Ashmolean Museum and the Pitt Rivers Museum, she went on to make this traditional craft accessible beyond Japan using specially designed materials. She now teaches internationally and runs workshops and repairs from her Oxford studio.
Iku will provide broken ceramic pieces for you to work on – there won’t be time to repair your own china during the session, but you’ll leave with the knowledge and confidence to try it yourself.
Come and learn how repair can be visible, intentional and quietly powerful.
Limited spaces available – first come, first served. If you can no longer attend, please cancel your place on the app to allow others the opportunity.
