Fifty Years of Progress in Radioactive Waste Management: The Flowers Report Revisited

28th April 2026, 5:30 – 7:30 pm

The Central England Branch of the Nuclear Institute would like to welcome you to hear a talk on the “Nuclear Power and the Environment” report by John Wilkins.

Published in September 1976 by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, and often known as the “Flowers Report” after its chairman, the report covered many important aspects of radioactive waste management in the UK and made 15 radioactive waste related recommendations. The most important recommendation stated that:

“There should be no commitment to a large programme of nuclear fission power until is has been demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that a method exists to ensure the safe containment of long-lived highly radioactive waste for the indefinite future.”

Progress on these recommendations over the last 50 years will be reviewed, including comments on current issues.

Date: Tuesday 28th April

Time: 17:30 – 19:30

Venue: Ridgeway House, Fermi Avenue, Harwell Campus, OX11 0QX

Light refreshments will be provided.

This is an in-person event. Advanced registration is required – closing date Mon 27th April.
