One day soon we will be able to harvest solar energy in space and beam it down to earth virtually eliminating emissions of greenhouse gases. Researchers from the Satellite Application catapult and Frazer Nash are working together to turn this concept into a reality.
Advances in robotics, rocket and satellite technology, solar panel efficiency, and the falling costs of launching such systems into space means an orbital demonstrator could be in space within 10 years, and an operational system by 2040.
Space Energy is the third film from our Mission Zero series, which explores the organisations at Harwell that are collaborating to deliver a cleaner greener future for us all. From environmentally friendly fertilisers, to beaming clean energy from space, green battery storage and hybrid aeroplanes, together we can achieve net zero.
