As of Monday 18th February, the maximum speed limit across Harwell Campus will be 20mph. Some areas, such as the RAL site, already operate a 20mph maximum limit so this change makes speed restrictions consistent across the Campus.
Commenting on why the 20mph has come into effect, Angus Horner, Partner and Director of Harwell Campus said: ‘As we continue to grow, with new organisations moving here or choosing to stay here and expand, we need to ensure that Harwell remains a safe environment for our community. Whether people drive or bike to work, run at lunchtime or walk to get their lunch, or are children being dropped off for nursery, we want everyone to feel safe when they move around the Campus.”
With ~200 organisations across the site employing ~5,500 people plus hundreds of visitors each day, the Campus has a vast amount of people passing through its gates. As well as major science labs and commercial companies there are amenities that service the wider community in South Oxfordshire, such as shops, a post office, a hairdressers and two pre-school nurseries. A 20mph speed limit will ensure a safer environment for everyone on the site from the people going to work, to the young children attending nursery.
