Public Speaking Workshop

11th October 2024, 9:30 am – 1:30 pm

Join Polly Tisdall as we unravel the art of presenting and storytelling to help you gain confidence, inspire your audience.

Focusing on effective storytelling for public speaking, these 2 sessions will provide you with a portfolio of exercises, approaches and techniques to enable you to better present your work to diverse audiences.

Session one on 11 October (4 hours) will focus on identifying and developing your natural tools for effective communication (voice, body language and gesture) before introducing dramatic story structure and considering how you might apply this to your work and life.

Session two on 18 October (4 hours) consolidating and embedding what’s learnt. Polly will help you develop your structure and delivery – working with character, conflict, contrast and emotional impact. You will have the chance to practise presenting in front of a small group, to play with your ideas and to receive constructive feedback to further refine your story.

Whether you have explored storytelling before, are an experienced public speaker or a complete beginner, this session is designed to create a safe space for testing ideas and exploring how your work can become a compelling and memorable narrative.

Please feel free to bring a piece of work you have either previously presented or would like to present in future. If you don’t have anything in mind, don’t worry – just bring yourself! Please wear clothes you feel comfortable moving around in and a bottle of water.

This workshop has limited spaces so please only sign up if you can commit to both sessions. If for any reason you can’t attend please let us know to free up your space for another person on campus.
