Communicating Science Effectively
Media Skills for Professionals
Join Dr Tom Crawford, aka ’Tom Rocks Maths’ to learn how you can become a media superstar (social or otherwise). Using his experience from his time as a Science Journalist with the BBC, Tom will outline the key questions reporters ask themselves when deciding whether or not to cover a science story, and how you can pitch your work to best capture their attention.
We’ll then put this to the test with a live interview session, which will also feature top tips on how to easily record your own videos for social media. In the second part of the workshop, we’ll look at some examples of good and bad practice as a scientist on social media, as well as a hands-on session where Tom will help you to create your own content. There will also of course be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, and to hear more about Tom’s journey to over 20 million YouTube views.
